Stories of Gratitude

Tyler 's heart for Makapala

Tyler.jpg

If I could describe Makapala Retreat Center in one word, it would be Heaven. Every time I come to Makapala, I feel an overwhelming sense of peace, as if everything that once weighed me down has been lifted. Makapala is a beautiful place, filled with lush greenery and open spaces that invite you to breathe deeply and reconnect with nature. Coming from the busy, fast-paced life of City Island (aka O‘ahu), being at Makapala feels like entering a whole new world. It’s where I can kick off my slippahs, go barefoot, and truly connect with the land beneath me.

But what truly makes Makapala special is the people who care for it and the stories it holds from those who have lived, grown, and gathered there. My first experience at Makapala was in 2017 for Camp Lokahi, a camp that brings youth from across Hawai‘i together. It’s a place where we not only have fun but also experience the love of Jesus.

For me, Makapala is more than just a location—it’s a place of peace, growth, and connection. It’s where I’ve made lifelong friends, where strangers have turned into family, and where my spirit finds rest. I’m deeply grateful for Aunty Lis and Uncle Ed, the directors of Makapala, whose nurturing care and love are felt throughout the retreat center. Their hearts pour into this place, much like the love of Jesus, and it’s because of them that Makapala remains so special.

Makapala captures beautiful stories—a place where memories are made, lives are transformed, and the land is a testament to many moments people have shared. To me, Makapala isn’t just a retreat center—it’s a glimpse of what I imagine heaven will be like: peaceful, full of love, and a place where my heart will always feel at home.
